Founder of CTS, Lawrie Love visits the forum theatre to see the
Bill Kenwright UK Tour of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat" mainly to see his sister in the choir!
Sunday 31st December 1989 – 2pm
Aged 15 he is given keys to the St. Columba's' Church in Billingham to
start a new theatre group for youngsters in the area. Word of mouth
and leaflets brought him a handful of local children!
April 1990
The first performance inspired by the first piece of professional
theatre Lawrie had seen "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat"
is presented to parents, church congregation and public at the Church.
1992
Whilst CTS students and Lawrie work on staging some dance excerpts
from the musical CATS for a new show, a new young dancer enrols.
Alicia Danby blows the company away with her phenomenal dance power,
intense physical presence and high level of focus. She later becomes
the CTS choreographer. She is now Alicia Ariana Iman.
1997
Lawrie decides to ask any parents if they would like to become
involved with the School. Seven persons are chosen to form the new CTS
Committee. CTS will never be the same again as they get to work on
fundraising and offering support to all projects and shows.
June 1998
On behalf of CTS, Alicia Iman meets with Moore Leisure (new owners of
the Synthonia Club) to ask if they would consider a youth theatre
company moving in permanently to their premises which includes a large
proscenium arch style theatre with fly tower, studio space and
construction spaces for scenery. Moore Leisure agree and CTS begin
moving into the new home.

July 1998
CTS pack up what little belongings they have from previous
community halls and the church and move into their current home in the
Billingham Synthonia Club presenting a small show called Event 9T8.
With limited funds the production goes ahead with very little
resources and lighting etc.
A gentleman called Jimmy Barnes asks if he can be of any help with our
productions.Meanwhile the CTS Committee take on more
fundraising and take up an active role in the school.
October 1998
Enough money was raised from the Event 9T8 show to present a new mini
show to parents, this would raise enough money to present a larger
Christmas show later in the year. Whilst the small show went ahead
Jimmy Barnes, Alicia Iman & Lawrie Love worked hard to make temporary
scenery, props and backdrops for the bigger Christmas Show.
Jimmy Barnes continues at the theatre dedicating much of his free time
to CTS for over 10 years.
1999
Jimmy Barnes, Alicia Iman & Lawrie Love work tirelessly to make
important health and safety changes to the theatre on an almost empty
budget whilst Alicia focuses on new choreography and keeping classes
exciting. The CTS Committee arrange with a local store to get our
students bag packing and doing sponsored events to raise funds.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is offered to local schools as a Christmas show for the end of the year. This is the first time CTS have performed to Schools. Parents agree to take their children out of school for two performances so we can perform to these schools.
Dec 1998
A presentation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was
presented for three evenings, the largest production in our new but almost empty theatre. Enough money was raised from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to make some health and safety
improvements to the theatre and advertise for some new
students for 1999.

2000 – 2004
The school and theatre is continually being altered, improved and maintained with the help of older students, the CTS Committee and staff. The stage apron is dramatically redeveloped for a production of Moulin Rouge by Jimmy Barnes.
We increase performances in the year. New performances include The Wizard of Oz, Moulin Rouge, A Chorus Line, Dangerous, Revue and Hot Variety.
Disgruntled parents are outraged by risqué choreography and staging for Moulin Rouge. We are reported to the local Social Services and Licensing Department who agree to sit through a performance of Moulin Rouge. They agree with Lawrie that the performance focuses on the original story of love and tragedy and that the risqué choreography is very well performed, tasteful and an important part of the story. Moulin Rouge is given the thumbs up and allowed to continue.
Dance Captains have their names changed to Principals. Students are introduced to a new musical Wicked on Broadway.
New awards are created and to be presented to students at the end of the year for high achievements etc.
The first CTS summer fayre is held.
Revue is the first production to use hired in moving head lighting
technology.

Moore Leisure decide to do a complete makeover of the theatre. They are keen to allow Lawrie to design the hall with a theatrical vision in mind. Carpets are ripped out, décor is changed and a new lighting rig is installed. The main hall is now renamed Theatre Suite.
It is from this year forward that CTS sees former students graduate from prestigious stage schools and gain employment within the
industry.
Principal teams/houses are set up at CTS. They are named after famous theatres on Broadway and in the West End. They are Dominion House, Prince Edward House, Apollo Victoria House and Gershwin House.
April 2005
CTS perform the first production of the year after the remodelling of the theatre. The production is called Fantastica and features scenes from Wicked. The first time anything from Wicked has been performed in Teesside. Jimmy Barnes is sad to say a farewell to CTS but remains close to the theatre. Director and theatrical visionary Franco Dragone inspires the creative team greatly and new productions include The Grinch who Stole Christmas, a new production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Equinox, La Zureus, Allure, One Night Only, Event 2006 and Once Upon a Time.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was the first production to ever cast outside of the school. This proved enormously successful and is the meeting time for Lesley Thompson, Shabnam Darbar and Lawrie Love.
The Grinch who Stole Christmas was the first production to use
musical underscoring from separate productions.
Equinox was the first production performed at CTS inspired by the Canadian company Cirque du Soleil. Equinox was the first production to use our 14ft trampoline and wind blowing machines.
One Night Only was the first production to use projection images as a major focal point, inspired by A New Day directed by Franco Dragone.
Once Upon a Time was the first production performed using Sisal Rope in the fly tower.
La Zureus was the first production to use our very own moving light technology. Two Martin Mac 250's were purchased for this new
production.
A points system is set up to encourage students to work, perform better and contribute to their houses more.

February 2008 +
The first ever presentation from The Voice Theatre Company is
performed. A Boy Called It was the first production to require a full sized realistic living room set. The audience were seated on the stage very close to the action to create an intimate feeling.
A green team is set within the theatre to ensure the company runs more energy efficient. They perform numerous tasks to make CTS a more green company.
Former student Stephen Uppal is offered a role as Ravi in Hollyoaks whilst other former students complete their training at top London Stage Schools.
The school now produces 12 productions or events in the year. The largest number of events held by CTS in a 12 month period. Former student Dan Kharsa is offered a role in Chicago The Musical, Stevie Hutchinson is offered roles in High School Musical and later Hairspray The Musical in London's West End.
The first ever performance of an Evening of Entertainment is
performed. Tap and Ballet is now offered to students under the tuition of Susan Thornton. Singing Lab is a new class set up for those
interested in singing.
Prefects are chosen to assist principals and a new student council is elected to work to benefit all students at CTS. Gabrielle Green is elected as Chairperson whilst Rebecca Robinson is elected as
Secretary.

Fracture moved in and produced Peter Pan as their first major Christmas show in their new home!
Fracture also produced The Show in 2011 as a parody on amateur theatre. Fracture Theatre also began to teach the dance phenomenon that is Zumba which swept the UK in early 2011.
Moulin Rouge exploded back onto the CTS stage in October 2010 with lead roles played by Olivia Calvert (Satine), Jack Bandeira (Christian), Luke MacGregor (The Duke), Callum Woodhouse (Zidler) and Lucien Sanchez (Narrator).
Moulin Rouge being one of the companies most famous and well attended productions broke all records and extended it's run. Moulin Rouge is hoped to be the summer production of 2012 with a brand new revival.
CTS says goodbye to Artistic Director of The Voice Theatre Company Shabnam Darbar in 2010, and Lawrie Love takes over as Director. With a new emphasis on performing plays in the style of repertory with the students rehearsing two plays at any one time.
The new plays would also be produced in a way whereby the company stages one large scale play and one in black box style! A new initiative is arranged within the company to encourage students to direct one performance in each season.
This began with Luke MacGregor directing Of Mice and Men, whilst Lawrie Love directed Misery. Other works produced in 2011 included Bouncers and whilst Abigail's Party was 50% blocked and staged sadly this show had to be cancelled with an emphasis on re-staging in 2012. The Voice also changed tactic with approach to training and the needs of individual students and their careers.
in the summer of 2011, Paul Llewellyn offers CTS the chance to appear on his popular amateur theatre programme. The show offers amateur companies an opportunity to reveal themselves to the general public about how life is in the amateur world of performing arts. You can watch this video here.
Productions in 2011 included Potastic (Young Set), Hot Variety (Conservatoire de Theatre) and Event 2011 (All companies). The Christmas production of 2011 (at the time of writing) is to be a Christmas Concert performed by all companies. This will be the first time CTS has ever staged a traditional celebration of Christmas.
2012
Plans for 2012 include Grease (Conservatoire de Theatre), Little Shop of Horrors (Conservatoire de Theatre) and Moulin Rouge (Conservatoire de Theatre). It is hoped that there will be three performances from students at the Young Set and a further three performances from The Voice Theatre Company.
Either way time will tell!
